Federal Ministry of Environment Showcase Global Biofuels Project as a Flagship Renewable Energy Idea.

The Federal Ministry of Environment on 20th October 2010 showcased Global Biofuels project as a flagship renewable energy idea during its Renewable Energy Programme themed “Scaling up Renewable Energy Development in Nigeria” held in Abuja. Global Biofuels Ltd is developing a biofuels production refinery using sweet sorghum, one of the most promising feedstocks which does not compete with the food chain.

The Ministry in its brochure on pages 2 and 3 and whose front cover appears below, published and distributed to stakeholders during the event emphasized the advantages of sweet sorghum over other feedstock types for Biofuels production. According to the Ministry, sweet sorghum is hardy and thrives in arid conditions such as obtains across the northern parts of West Africa where precipitation is low and access to irrigation water is limited. The Ministry also posited that sweet sorghum is able to withstand storm and flooding thus reducing the risk of crop failure.

The National Programme Director for Renewable Energy in the Ministry Engr. (Mrs) Abubakar stated that the main objectives of the programme includes moving Nigeria towards a clean, reliable, secure and safe green economy which can be achieved applying the GBfL’s initiative. According to her, GBfL’s idea will not only produce clean fuel but will also produce electricity from wastes (bargasse), create 8000 direct jobs in each area of its operation and generate additional earnings from carbon and methane credits.

According to her, the Federal Ministry of Environment is happy to be in partnership with GBfL and look forward to assisting the company achieve its goals of establishing 10 sweet sorghum refineries at different locations across Nigeria.
